So about two years ago I really wanted a guitar and after not getting one for my birthday I was really disapointed. But about three months after that I got my first ever guitar and his name is miles. So anyway when I first got miles I wanted to cry (not literally) but it was so annoying having this thing I’ve always wanted and not being able to use it. I didn’t want guitar lessons as at the time I was fairly busy but I noticed one of my teachers could play a guitar so I asked if after school one day (after my science revision) if he would teach me. That I think was a very weird conversation but he said yes. So for about a month he would stay behind every Wednesday and teach me the basics. But after about two weeks I slowly stopped going. Not sure why but I did so all little me knew at that time was the basic major chords : E, C and G. I remember thinking this is a good start because now I can play a song but few songs go E,C,G and that was all I could do and what’s worse is I could only do them in that order.
Looking back now I feel so sorry for little me. So after trying to get my teacher to teach me I decided I’d teach myself. For a further month or two I would come home from school after revision and watch millions of guitar tutorials per day. Which did and didn’t help. The people often went too fast and as I was below even a beginner I often didn’t know where they were telling me to put my fingers. But through determination I found a way to teach myself how to play my guitar.
So by now it’s around July 2013 and after teaching myself a) the “language” meaning just where things are and how to number your strings, B) more chords and c) more interesting strumming patterns than the down,down,down pattern I used before. I was ready to call myself a beginer.
Now its 2015 and I can play a range of chords and strumming patterns and it’s all thanks to my determination. I am the queen of putting things off but I felt really proud knowing I taught myself how to do something moderately hard. So Ive crossed out “learn how to play an instrument” as I can now play two (and a half= violin but I didn’t really like it so I stopped trying) instruments. Miles and my ukulele are like babies to me and I think if you don’t play an instrument you should definitely try and teach yourself. It’s frustrating but it gets better and in the end it’s very rewarding, it can work as a form of stress relief…
